We are beekeepers and bee removal specialists in honey bee removal, African bee control, honeycomb removal, wasp removal and wasp control; not pest control.
San Diego, California - AAA Africanized Bee Removal Specialists, Inc is extremely unique. Not only do we specialize in San Diego, CA bee removal/extermination, honeycomb removal and wasp removal/extermination, it is ALL we do, not a sideline like all of our competitors. Unlike any other competitor in San Diego, CA, we do not perform any other aspect of pest control except, bees, wasps, hornets and honeycomb removal. All of our San Diego, CA specialists are very seasoned, well trained, experienced professional San Diego, CA beekeepers that have been trained in our parent company which is a large commercial beekeeping company headquartered in Tucson, AZ. Our competitors, on the other hand, are not beekeepers, but rather are San Diego, CA pest control companies who do termite extermination, and other pest control in San Diego, CA. Frankly, few other pest control companies actually attempt to perform San Diego, CA bee extermination. Most who attempt it are seriously inexperienced. All companies that do bee removal in San Diego, CA are regulated by the State of California, Structural Pest Control Board. Despite the fact that our men are all trained San Diego beekeepers, our specialists are held to the same standards as other San Diego, CA "pest control operators," however, our specialists have a huge advantage over operators trained only in San Diego, CA pest control. Our specialists are trained for a minimum of 5 years in our San Diego, CA beekeeping company and have an intimate knowledge of bee biology and bee behaviors. With the specialized equipment that only we have, our specialists are able to identify whether or not a colony is newly arrived, or an established colony. Another advantage of using our company is that we use pheromone concentrating and calming agents and non-toxic or very low toxicity pesticides. Clearly, our methods are unique and proven. We have for years been well known to get the job done right first time, every time.
Our Company History.
Our parent company is a large, Tucson based commercial beekeeping company called Arizona Bee Products. It has been in business since the 1970s. It is a very progressive, sophisticated, honey and pollen producing commercial beekeeping company. One of its founders is Tom Martin. He also founded the bee removal company, AAA Africanized Bee Removal Specialists, Inc. for our parent company and is the president of our company. That was in January of 1993. It was clear to Tom Martin and others in our parent company that African honeybees were going to quickly expand into Arizona. For over 40 years Tom Martin has been a commercial beekeeper. During the 1970s, he worked as an apicultural researcher for the US Department of Agriculture at the USDA Carl Hayden Honeybee Research Laboratory in Tucson, AZ. He gained extensive knowledge about bees, their behavior and characteristics through his beekeeping experiences and his work at that USDA Federal Bee Lab. In the late 1970s, Tom Martin left the Bee Lab to do field beekeeping research for the private sector. He was hired by Arizona Bee Products. Tom Martin has worked for them ever since. Commercial beekeeping is extremely hard work, especially in Arizona. It was clear to Tom that once African honeybees crossed the Arizona border, beekeeping in Arizona would likely change forever. A progressive beekeeping company would have to be prepared to deal with this invasive, aggressive species of honeybees. As Arizona law requires a company to be a licensed pest control company in order to control any pest, the chore of becoming a pest control company was undertaken in early 1993. Hence, our company AAA Africanized Bee Removal Specialists, Inc. was founded and completed the rigorous endeavor of becoming a Licensed Pest Control Company.

Africanized Honey Bees in San Diego County Africanized honey bees (AHB) are a more temperamental relative of the common garden honey bee, known as the European honey bee. (AHB) were first introduced into Brazil in 1956, and have been steadily moving northward since then. They are currently found in the United States in parts of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Africanized honey bees are known to defend their colonies more intensively and with less provocation than other bees, and so it is important to know how to avoid being stung.
Are Africanized Honey Bees in San Diego County? Africanized honey bees (AHB) are here! The entire County, from the desert to the coast, is considered colonized by AHB. This means that you might encounter aggressive honey bees anywhere in the County. Bees are most active in the spring and fall, so be especially careful during those times. With a few simple precautions, you can protect yourself and others. If you are attacked by Bees call 911!
How to Protect Yourself.
Stay away from honey bee colonies. • Africanized honey bees sting to defend themselves or their nest. • If you can avoid disturbing them in any way, they usually will not sting. • To avoid approaching a nest by accident, listen for the steady buzz produced by a colony and look for flying insects. • Look for bees to nest in cavities such as holes in the ground, crevices in rocks, hollow trees, discarded tires, saguaro cactus cavities, or water meter boxes. • Homeowners commonly encounter colonies when doing yard work. • Do not climb a tree, kick over a log or roll over a rock without checking first for bees. • If you do see a colony, do not stand in front of the entrance or in the flight path. • Treat honey bee colonies as you would any other venomous creature, such as a snake or a scorpion. • Be alert and stay away!
Wear appropriate clothing. • When hiking or hunting in the wilderness, wear light-colored clothing. • The animals most likely to attack a bee colony are skunks and bears, so honeybees respond most violently to anything that is dark-colored or fuzzy. • Wear white socks, because honey bees are known to sting the ankles of persons wearing dark socks. • Always wear full-length pants when hiking and long-sleeved shirts if possible. • Avoid wearing shiny jewelry and leather, which attract bees.
Avoid wearing perfumes or scents. • Bees are sensitive to odors such as perfumes, soaps, after-shave lotions, and hair spray. These odors may either attract or provoke bees. Even sunscreens may have odors that increase your chances of an attack.
Avoid excessive motion when near a colony. • Bees are able to detect movement, and are much more likely to respond to an object in motion than one that is stationary. • Avoid flailing your arms or swatting at bees. • Do not panic if you spot a bees' nest, just move away slowly and deliberately. • Avoid operating any machinery (mowers, line-trimmers or chain saws) near nests. • If you are attacked by several bees, then the best strategy is to run to shelter as quickly as possible.
Pet safety • When hiking, it is best to keep your dog on a leash or under close control. • A large animal bounding through the brush is likely to disturb a colony and be attacked. • When the animal returns to its master, it will bring the attacking bees with it. • Animals receive numerous stings because they cannot escape the bees. • Be careful not to tie or pen animals near honey bee hives. Even the mild-mannered European honey bee has been known to attack animals tied near their hives. • If your animals or pets are being stung, try to release them without endangering yourself.
Minimize stings once a colony of Africanized honey bees begins to attack: Run away quickly, using a direct route to shelter, or until the bees stop following (up to 1/2 mile). Bees tend to target the sensitive areas around the eyes and head. Cover your head as much as possible by pulling your collar up over your ears or your shirt over your head and face while you run. Get inside a house, car, or other closed building. Do not worry about bringing a few bees in with you, just get indoors. If you are trapped for some reason, cover up with blankets, sleeping bags, clothes, etc.County of San DiegoDepartment of Agriculture, Weights and Measures
Bee Alert - Africanized Honey Bee Facts. Africanized honey bees (AHB)--also called "killer bees"--are established in parts of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California. Although the killer reputation has been greatly exaggerated, the presence of AHB increases the chances of people being stung. Learning about the AHB and taking certain precautions can lower the risk of being injured by this new insect in our environment. The Africanized honey bee is closely related to the European honey bee used in agriculture for crop pollination and honey production. The two types of bees look the same and their behavior is similar in many respects. Neither is likely to sting when gathering nectar and pollen from flowers, but both will sting in defense if provoked. A swarm of bees in flight or briefly at rest seldom bothers people. However, all bees become defensive when they settle, begin producing wax comb and raising young.
Africanized and European Bees: • Look the same • Protect their nests and sting in defense • Can sting only once • Have the same venom • Pollinate flowers • Produce honey and wax Africanized honey bees are less predictable and more defensive than European honey bees. They are more likely to defend a greater area around their nest. They respond faster in greater numbers, although each bee can sting only once.
Africanized Honey Bees: • Respond quickly and sting in large numbers • Can sense a threat from people or animals 50 feet or more from nest • Sense vibrations from power equipment 100 feet or more from nest • Will pursue an enemy 1/4 mile or more • Swarm frequently to establish new nests • Nest in small cavities and sheltered areas AHB nest in many locations where people may encounter them. Nesting sites include: empty boxes, cans, buckets or other containers; old tires; infrequently used vehicles; lumber piles; holes and cavities in fences, trees or the ground; sheds, garages and other outbuildings; and low decks or spaces under buildings. Remove potential nest sites around buildings. Be careful wherever bees may be found.
General Precautions. • Listen for buzzing indicating a nest or swarm of bees • Use care when entering sheds or outbuildings where bees may nest • Examine work area before using lawn mowers, weed cutters and other power equipment • Examine areas before tying up or penning pets or livestock • Be alert when participating in all outdoor sports and activities • Don't disturb a nest or swarm--contact a pest control company or an emergency response organization • Teach children to be cautious and respectful of all bees • Check with a doctor about bee sting kits and procedures if sensitive to bee stings • Develop a safety plan for your home and yard • Organize a meeting to inform neighbors about the AHB to help increase neighborhood safety.
Bee-Proofing Your Home • Remove possible nesting sites around home and yard • Insect outside walls and eaves of home and outbuildings • Seal openings larger than 1/8" in walls, around chimneys and plumbing • Install fine screens (1/8" hardware cloth) over tops of rain spouts, vents and openings in water meter/utility boxes • From spring to fall check once or twice a week for bees entering or leaving the same area of your home or yard. As a general rule, stay away from all honey bee swarms and colonies. If bees are encountered, get away quickly. While running away, try to protect face and eyes as much as possible. Take shelter in a car or building. Water or thick brush does not offer enough protection. Do not stand and swat at bees; rapid motions will cause them to sting.
What To Do If Stung • Go quickly to a safe area • Remove stinger as soon as possible • Don't squeeze stinger; pressure will release more venom • Scrape stinger out with fingernail, knife blade or credit card • Wash sting area with soap and water like any other wound • Apply ice pack for a few minutes to relieve pain and swelling • Seek medical attention if breathing is troubled, if stung numerous times or if allergic to bee stings.
